Romeo & Juliet: The Game of Love

December7

Shakespeare is a well-known playwright for his famous play Romeo and Juliet. This play has made me feel many emotions especially twowards the relationship between Lady Capulet and her daughter, Juliet. I began to become furious with idea of Lady Capulet pushing Juliet to consider marrying Paris. I believe any kind of marriage is beautiful but only if happiness is involved. However , I disagree with idea of forcing someone to get married when they do not believe in the idea of it.

If marriage is not someone’s priority you have no right to force your ideals on someone else. Lately, in society, people believe in a recipe to a perfect life which include ridiculous expectations. I do not believe in the perfect wedded life that Lady Capulet speaks of. Marriage is supposed to be full of flaws and hardships. The reason these adversities exist is to see if a relationship is sturdy enough to continue on. With out these attributes we will never know if our significant other will be there right by our side through the difficulties we might face. I want to experience the love and the pain in a marriage because this will be a sign that I am experiencing the real thing.

As both a mother and woman I would think that Lady Capulet would understand Juliet’s perspective towards the concept  of marriage at such a young age. I will never understand why Lady Capulet believed that it was her postition to influence Juliet to agree to these circumstances. I sympathize with Juliet since I am near her age and where my parents grew up by now we are expected to be married with a kid now. If my mother ever approached me with a proposal I would decline right away. Being married at such a young age could create so much emotional damage and corrupt an individual. Juliet is expected to be married by now when her life has not even begun yet. Lady Capulet was also married at a very young age. She was given an overload of responsiblities and had to mature quite quickly. I assumed that being in a similar boat as Juliet she would not let her daughter sink to rock bottom like she did. She would want is best for her child and wait to suggest marriage towards Juliet when she becomes an appropriate age. I was bewildered when Lady Capulet was not able to see Juliet’s point of view since she was in her shoes a very long time ago.

Marriage involves a huge committment that a thirteen year old would not be able to understand. You are expected to take responsibilities for your actions, choices, and words. It is a sign of real maturity that Juliet would not be able to handle. I am at least three years older than Juliet and I still do not understand the components of marriage. I have not explored the world yet , and fulfilled my wishes yet which is simply why marriage is out of the question in my mind. Juliet has accomplished not too much in her life and marriage would also be the last thing on her mind also. Marriage begins to constrict your decisions since now it is not just about you anymore. In my opinion marriage at that age is game over.

The Facade That Conceals

December7

Often times naivety and innocence can be used as a façade to shield someone from the reality of their circumstances; however as the facade begins to fade they come to realize just how flawed their perception had been before. Naivety is a fragile characteristic that many, inherit, however, if it is not handled by the right people it could be taken advantage of without the individuals consent. People who are naive are not able to view the negatively and accept its flaws. They have a façade that conceals all the faults and many times this exterior is difficult to remove which makes this individuals behavior child-like. The Truman Show stars a man named Truman who is from an island known as Sea Haven. This place was formed to model an idealistic reality which was developed by a man known as Christof. This film connects to my motif since Truman was protected as a child and because of this his perception of the world is observed in a pure manner. He is yet to discover and understand the numerous flaws the society contains within itself. He is unaware about the truth that is being hidden from him because of the concealment he carries with him. In the film The Truman Show, directorPeter Weir explores the idea that Truman is still unable to distinguish the constant hints he receives because of his sincere character. Through individuals becoming oblivious towards their surroundings, how to escape their reality once the truth has been revealed and finally accepting that the individual has been deceived Truman will soon be able to experience the pain felt in an imperfect world.

Initially, when someone has become blinded by an impractical truth they are oblivious towards a variety of obvious circumstantial misconceptions. Throughout the film, Truman has come across many incidents that were on the verge of exposing the entire show however; based on his impulse he avoided these particular situations.  During the beginning of the film a light from the set had dropped on the ground and had landed near Truman. He believed that this obscure event was not directed to him and shrugged it off as if the incident never occurred in the first place. He is too ignorant to understand how he is being manipulated by the society and Christof. It’s as if Truman has become a puppet who has no control over his mind and actions. While analyzing this situation in the film I realized that a possible reason Truman ignored this irregular circumstance was only because it involved breaking his routine. It is unusual for him to witness something exciting like this. His natural instinct might have been to carry on as if it was a regular day. He began to assume that he had been at the wrong place at the wrong time. The strange behavior, and defaults on the show’s effects and many more ridiculous reoccurrences had caused Truman to gradually take notice and become paranoid. This demonstrates that even though Truman was slow to understand the odd misconceptions he was quick to realize that his every action was being watched. By him doing this it implies that he has received multiple hints as a child but he had been taught not to give attention to them since they are not relevant to his life.

When an individual becomes suspicious due to their mistrustful environment they begin the journey of removing the mask that shields their view which was placed by society, during the film Truman was presented by many opportunities to replace his idealistic views with realistic values. He began to close off from his friends and family since his paranoia had taken a huge leap. He began to apprehend others and became attentive of his surroundings. These multiple incidents that have taken place earlier in the film influenced his behavior and reactions. He began to conceal his emotions because after determining that all these people he assumed were his close friends were completely fake. He was heartbroken. His trust was torn and so was his heart. Since Truman is not considered to be a mature adult yet because of the influence of his utopia he was not able to endure with this kind of pain. He was frustrated, irritated, and concerned. This realization raised question of why would someone do something like this for entertainment.  Many believed Truman was a decent man who did not deserved to be enslaved in a dome away from his travelling desires. However even some of the less significant cast members had taken part of this deception such as the neighbors. During the search party when Truman escaped the neighbors were criticizing him rather than worrying if he was alive or not. This indicates that many had pursued this show in the best interest for themselves rather that Truman and he is still trying to handle this kind of reality hitting him.

Finally once someone is disclosed to the hard hitting reality they try to figure out a coping mechanism with this situation. Truman unfortunately had been placed in a position where he has not been able to break free and experience a life with pain revealing itself on a regular basis. The only time Truman was unveiled to pain was the traumatizing day of when his father had passed away even though that was also fake. The exposure to pain is extremely significant since it helps you deal with terrible incidents and learning to deal with in a positive manner. Truman took this entire situation harshly however towards the end of the film he was able to conceal it. He carried on with the illusion that everything is fine and he is not going to escape. The moment he was presented with opportunity he vanished from his basement. As he discovered the dome and Christof he stays silent for majority of the time. Despite feeling like he was betrayed Truman was courageous enough to leave the show in a high note. Rather than leaving the show in a negative way he recites his catchphrase for the very last time. For someone who had been protected from pain and sorrow for his entire life Truman handled the situation incredibly well. He was still broken after realizing the truth but instead of criticizing everyone he acknowledges his dedicated audience. Truman was spontaneous and audacious for leaving the show and his exit was truly remarkable.

In the film The Truman Show, Peter Weir explores the idea of an individual whose naivety and innocence is built as a façade to help make sure their influenced perception is not exposed to the world’s flaws. By ignoring all the possible signs and coincidences proves that he believed that they happened unintentionally towards him. Truman’s purpose of being concealed from his reality grew his heart’s desire to escape his fixed world. Truman showed a great deal of courage while facing the truth of his deceitful reality. The director’s purpose of this was to remind others that not everyone is exposed to what you are. Some might be shielded for society’s content rather than their own. This movie touched on key elements of maturing and how many people are not at the stage where they are able to remove the blindfold and step up to reality.

When I FInally Knew

October6

One day l knew what I wanted to do with my life once high school came to end. This realization did not occur to me overnight, of course. It took time to discover this idea, but first I had to understand myself as an individual, my strengths , my weaknesses, my likes , and my dislikes.

I discovered my true passion in life is make up and henna tattoos. I had applied henna and make up for others often , but I had never thought that I could do this as a profession. My confidence is generally low; however, when I apply these on other people, I feel confident and happy. I have this self awareness that I am good at this; it was the first time I had ever accepted that I was good at something! With my growing interest, I started to experiment with colors: purples , blues ,greens , yellows – all these colors mesmerized me. It was the day my own mother told me I had enough potential to create a living with this passion. It felt wonderful that for once my mom recognizing my talents in the arts rather than academics. After several years living in my sister’s shadow I was acknowledged for something that i consider beautiful. It took a while but I finally came to a conclusion that I am good enough and I can do anything. I have the potential to achieve this dream and its going to benefit me in the long run.

Everyday I’m working hard to achieve this goal and to become successful. Once I finally achieve my dream it will be a day that I will never forget. I’m getting closer each day and soon all my work will pay off. I know for a fact this is what I want to do with my life and there is no doubt in my mind.
