Bridge to Tomorrow

February26

“We are all ensnared by the technology we are attempting to evade”

When I try to look at the world, I see it through a camera lens or a computer screen. We take pictures, create television shows and commercials, as well as throw fliers in peoples faces, screaming the same message over and over: “TECHNOLOGY IS WASTEFUL AND LAZY”. I can’t help but think “redundant much?”, how much do we waste everyday just by running those ads or even the fliers that ultimately end up in a landfill along with other rejects of the human condition. It’s time to face the music; we are stuck with technology, no matter how much we try to escape it.

Our generation is fast paced and impatient: often expecting the answers before the question is developed. There is a certain point in our lives where we finally realize that life isn’t at the end of our iPhone battery life: by then we slow down. We slow to a snails pace and take in life and think about the rest of our lives, how we can be a better part of the future and, how we can stop the problems of the past. We repeat these cycles of consciousness through every generation: “Save the environment”, “use technology to save it”, “technology is useful let’s use it for everything”, “we’re killing our world”, “save the environment”… so-on-so-forth. We can never stop repeating the cycle; like a washing machine continuously on spin.

The cage on the bridge represents the trap laid for us by science and its’ electronic advancements. The cage is what we see as confinement and limitation: we’re only as advanced as the latest tech gadget. Why should there be a cage on our “freedom” bridge to the future? When do we get out the wire cutters and escape?  There has to be a point in the future when we pull the plug on the everlasting loop of  superfluities.

The bridge itself symbolizes the road we have to travel to independence; always in the shadow of the cage. It makes us realize that there is a long and hard path ahead, however, the open hole at the end shows our goal and when we become liberated. It encourages us to continue on our journey and work towards the final forthcoming. The children on the Segways makes us see the thesis statement in itself: using technology to escape technology. They are the hope, the dream, the adventures searching for the long forgotten utopia, they are the next generation. When you look at the green surrounding the bridge you can’t help but feel as if that’s what we did. We separated ourselves from nature, cut it from our lives almost entirely. That is the El Dorado, the Atlantis, The Safe Haven from all the problems we created with our constant want for power and the next best thing.
