“If”

May27

Rudyard Kipling’s “If” poem, illustrates the concept of developing self-confidence, developing a greater self-control and growing to be more mature. “If” is a piece of literature that dictates, and gives instruction. In this case this poem explains the traits in being a strong leader. Kipling describes these traits in a unique manner. He offers this instruction, not by listing various traits and characteristics but instead he provides a concrete illusion of the complex actions in which man should and shouldn’t take.

The first stanza, delineates, the power of self-confidence. He describes that along with self-confidence comes the ability to be courageous. Courage, allows you to stand up and face unpopular ideas and disagreements.

Line Seven advises mettle in a character. It implies that although there are people who do not appreciate and loathe you, don’t turn and be the same. Stay Strong. Always be yourself regardless of what others think of you. Even though, there are people in society who hate don’t follow the chain. Be confident in your own shoes and stand for what you believe is right.

The thesis for the second stanza is imagination vs. reality. Each line shows that is you can think/ believe anything you are capable of reaching it. You may be struck and delayed by various troubles, but if you dream it, persevere and you will be able to achieve it. Your goals are a staple in your life. If you can talk the talk, with out a doubt, you can walk the walk. At times, if you have temporary negative feelings, realize that you are capable of anything. Being in the proper mind frame, as well as having a dream, allow you to reach your goal and realize that your visions can become your reality.

The poem “If” highlights, the standards of behavior, for the human. The challenges are delivered by description. It describes how the person being addressed should behave, if the certain circumstances and scenarios arise. The poet teaches us that if we have ‘unrealistic’ dreams, yet we implement the qualities of self-confidence, bravery, love, and understanding to ourselves we will be capable if accomplishing and over achieving; miring line 31- Yours is the Earth and everything in it.

Kipling’s poem is simply insightful. His intuition and explanations are meaningful. “If” expresses a different way of telling the reader, anything is possible, by using both negative and positive concepts.

Elias, this was an essay that I couldn’t disagree to your points because I believe that courage that increases one’s oppurtunities of sucess. In addtion, It was wise of you to explain the moood of each stanza. My only suggestion for improvement it to specify the line/lines that you want to relate to. also, ensure to doublecheck that your placement of commas are used correctly. Outside of this, good job!
