Freedom

January16

A film that portrays the theme of freedom very well is The Most Dangerous Game, based on the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell. A summary of this short story: A man named Rainsford who is a hunter, fell off of a boat while looking towards an island which a gun shot had came from. Shortly after he fell off the boat that he was on, Rainsford swam to shore and met a guy named Ivan who was deaf and mental. Ivan who was a guard
to General Zaroff attented the military located in Germany. While on the island Rainsford stays with General Zaroff at his house, Rainsford learns that General Zaroff hunts anything and has animals imported to his island so he can hunt and kill them. General Zaroff reveals to Rainsford that the general will be hunting him and will hunt for 3 days. When those 3 days are up and Rainsford is still alive, he will be set free. During the hunt, some of General Zaroff’s dogs are killed by Rainsford and his amazingly well set traps. After 3 days General Zaroff gives up and lets Rainsford free but he can not find him. When General Zaroff is about to go to bed, he locks the door to his bedroom for safety, but he does not know that Rainsford is in his bedroom hiding in the shadows. Rainsford eventually wins the game but decides to, instead of  leaving, turn the table and play the game on General Zaroff. The End.  After reading this short story, it is crystal clear that the predominant theme of this story is freedom.

In this story Rainsford, one of the shipwrecked victims, is given a choice of playing a game in which he is hunted by the islands’s governor, General Zaroff, for a few days and if he is still alive he earns his freedom, or being killed immediately; Rainsford fights for and in the end he gets his freedom. Rainsford had no other choice but to play the game, in the end he gets the righteous virtue of freedom through the struggle and strive to attain the status of freedom. In those three brutal days of being hunted, Rainsford never gave up and fought endlessly to gain the right of freedom. All in all, this short story of freedom very clearly describes the priceless value of freedom and how one can do anything to achieve it.

    Dear Bill,
I like how you analyzed the story also a brief summary that you had given. Another thing I enjoyed about your piece of writing is that you described the climax and falling action the most in detail.
A few things that you can improve is describe more then just the plot, but put as much detail as possible for things such as the setting. Another thing you could do is use direct quotes to give the audience who are viewing his more of feeling of a story. Overall good job.
    Sincerely,
    Sukhmeet
