Truman Essay

January17

The manipulation of others is the control of people who are too naïve or ignorant to identify whether something is right or wrong. Our mind is such a precious thing to us. It’s where we store our purest memories, deepest secrets, the happiest moments and our worst experiences; it makes up who we are as people. If all of that was ripped out of our grasp who are we? The naivety of one’s self is taken advantage of because they do not know any better and someone is able to manipulate there mind state into something that they aren’t able to comprehend so they just accept it to stabilize such confusion. The ignorance that one possesses is able to cloud the judgment a person has about the environment around them and further questions are suppressed. The Truman show is an established society because Truman Burbank was being manipulated into thinking that he was living a normal life but in reality Christof was the sole “God” that controlled Truman throughout his whole life. In the film “The Truman Show” the director Peter Weir explores the idea of naivety and ignorance once can have when they are manipulated by others not willing to logically identify the current situation through beliefs, lies, and life.

Initially, everything that Truman thought as normal was all conspired to a make believe society to establish an American dream. When Truman, his wife Meryl, and his mother Angela were talking about the past, Meryl and Angela decided to leave Truman alone and due to this, he goes through his old wedding pictures that they were previously looking at. When he stumbles upon a picture of himself and Meryl he discovers that Meryl not only has the ring on the wrong finger, she also is crossing her fingers signifying that the marriage is all a lie. At this point in time, Truman’s belief is crumbling because his wife, the person he loved with all his heart, was not really in love with him. This predicament has left Truman appalled and is questioning if everything in his life is fake or if he’s being too paranoid. One’s belief can guide them throughout life marking the path they choose which shows who they are as people, when everything is too perfect; you won’t be able to handle road blocks along the way.

Then, Truman’s whole life has been a lie, the purpose being to negate any suspicion to his idealistic life. Truman and his best friend Marlon were at the bridge talking about life and what lies ahead. That’s when Marlon lies to Truman saying “I would never lie to you” about the whole ordeal of Truman being confused about his surrounding making him sound mad. As Truman grew up in this world, he believes everything to be normal everyone knows it’s all a façade and fools Truman to make money for everyone’s own selfish desire. To wield a person’s life and molding there future for them without them knowing, changing their ideas and beliefs into your own liking is horrid. Truman doesn’t have anyone there to guide him on the right path or to show him what it means to live; everything is handed to him on a silver platter.

Finally, everyone in life has to face some type of struggle to experience what life is and how you are able to overcome that obstacle to proceed with living in the world. When you skip that road block, you’re only delaying the inevitable which is bound to come back again in your life time. The reason we have to face such complications is that it gives us the experience to take the next step into life and leave our knowledge for future generations to come which will help them surpass such obstacle like you to proceed with life. Truman’s whole life he has been treated like a prince which requires no effort or any obstacles to tackle which gives him the lack of knowledge which someone requires to life in the real world. No one will be babying you all your life, you have to stand on your own two feet and experience everything in your own way, whether or not they are good or bad experience is better than not knowing anything. His whole life was the obstacle that he needed to overcome but because of “god” it was just steered the other way so Truman wasn’t able to proceed with his life. When Truman finally finds the end of his world and walks to the door on the wall, he says “in case I don’t see you, good afternoon, good evening, and good night” and walks into the door. That signifies that after all that time he finally is able to overcome his lifelong obstacle and can proceed with his life, the right way.

Our mind is what keeps us sane, it makes who we are, when we are to naïve or ignorant it makes us accessible to manipulation and when you are manipulated you don’t have a grasp on yourself. Through beliefs, lies, and your perception on life, people can remodel your whole world into their own idealism and you aren’t able to percept whether they are truly your ideals or beliefs, you are just able to accept them thinking they are your own.
