The Truman Show

January14

In the film “The Truman Show” there is countless symbols of innocence represented throughout the entire show. One of these symbols that is eminently shown is how Truman’s perspective changes from an innocent eye to almost being a rebel. When Truman finally breaks through this innocence he is able to truly be himself and explore the things that he has always dreamed of doing. The director of the show, Christof, purposely puts a sense of innocence and fear into Truman. The reason Christof does this is because he knows that if Truman were to discover this the outburst would be too much for him to control.

In the beginning of The Truman we see that Truman is living the perfect life and he is full of innocence. Truman never really questions anything in his life until he sees something strange. Truman is walking down the street when he sees a familiar face; he turns around to see that it is his father. As Truman has not seen his father since he was a little boy he calls out to him but his father is unexpectedly dragged away with force. This is the inciting incident of Truman beginning to question reality, he now starts to dig deeper and deeper and while doing so breaks off from being an innocent character. After all of these incidents Truman has changed from being someone who would believe something that almost anyone says, to questioning his entire life.

When Truman finally breaks out of the false life that he has been living since he was born he is finally able to do things that he has always wanted to do. Some of these things include going to Fiji to find the girl of his dreams. All this is because he has lost his innocence. I believe this because if he hadn’t lost his innocence he would have never been able to escape the set in the first place.

Christof, the director of the show, places innocence and fear into Truman’s life because he knows that that is the best way to control him. By doing this Truman never really questions or tries to leave the island until Christof makes a mistake. When everything starts going wrong this is when Truman starts to question all that he knows and when Truman finally does discover the truth, as said earlier, control over him is lost.

By doing all of this Christof has created the perfect environment for Truman to live in. But once Truman’s mind got going there was no way to stop it, leading to the best day of Truman’s life.

Tower Heist Personal Response

January8

Tower Heist was one of the better movies I have seen in a while. The whole plot and all the ideas that work put into this movie were portrayed brilliantly. One of the things that I loved about this movie was the way that it ended.  Throughout the movie it seems like their plan is really not going to work because of how messy it is, however, that is just what the producer wanted people to think. Through doing this the producer began to construct more and more tension as the robbery got closer and therefore made it that much more exciting to see what happens. Another thing that I loved about this movie was Eddie Murphy’s character, Slide. Slide was an extremely amusing character throughout the whole film, it was like everything he said or did made you laugh. From the plot to the characters everything about this movie was great and I enjoyed it.

Explication-Chapter 22

December19

Chapter 22

Pg. 213

“Atticus-“said Jem bleakly.

He turned in the doorway. “What, son?”

“How could they do it, how could they?”

“I don’t know, but they did it. They’ve done

it before and they did it tonight and they’ll

do it again and when they do it – seems like

only children weep.”

This passage shows two different perspectives of right and wrong in the novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. In the early 1900’s African American people were considered to be a lesser state than the rest of society, in this chapter we see the instinct of a child’s right and wrong oppose the rest of society’s perspective. The children of Maycomb know that what has happened is wrong but almost everyone else thinks that this is okay. The children want so badly to try and change what has happened but they have no possible way of doing that. Atticus’s view on this is that “We’ve made it this way for them, they might as well learn to cope with it.”

The way that Atticus speaks when he is talking to Jem looks like he has almost stopped caring about what happens because he knows he thinks he has no control anymore and has wasted his time. Atticus has tried so hard in past events to change other people’s perspectives but he cannot. This shows that it takes people to the point of something terrible happening to see what they have done, and in the novel this is what happens.

A Team-Poem

December5

Flocks of birds fly in the sky

You look up and wonder why

Why they fly so close together

A team of birds friends forever

A team that is strong

A team not weary

Falling Back

Not falling short

They reach for the sky

Not holding back

But pushing forward and achieving anything

This poem was inspired by the camp that I went to the weekend, Rapport, after going to this camp I had become part of a team. When I was on my way home I saw 3 sets of bird flocks and because I was thinking of teamwork, this poem just came to me. I experienced numerous feelings when I went on this camp and they are written in this poem.

Here Lies Arthur – Leisure Reading Letter

November22

Dear Beryl,

I want to recommend that you read and take interest in the book “Here Lies Arthur” by Philip Reeve, I have just read this book and it is full of suspense and is very entertaining. The story is about a young girl named Gwyna whose village is attacked by King Arthur’s men she flees the scene on the night of the attack and swims down the river until she is far enough away from the village. She is a great swimmer because “Raised near the river, I’d been in and out of it as long as I could remember.”(pg.8) When she gets out of the river she is too tired to walk so she stays on the shore for a while. A man passing by is kind enough to pick her up and help her. This man’s name is Myriddin; Myriddin is a kind man, he offers to give Gwyna food by saying, “Hungry?”(pg.11) Although Gwyna is starving and would love the bread offered by Myriddin, Gwyna denies the food as she does not know who this strange man is. If Myriddin is going to bring Gwyna along he is going to have to disguise her as a boy because a female servant would not be acceptable. So Myriddin cuts her hair short dresses her like a boy and names her Gwyn. Over time Gwyna and Myriddin become sort of friends. Together they scheme many skits of great acts by Arthur and tell stories to people all over. Inevitably, over time Gwyna starts developing female features and as a result, Myriddin sends her away somewhere where she can be a woman. I’m not going to say any more about the plot because it would just wreck the book for you and I wouldn’t want that, but I think that this would be a very interesting story for you. I know how much you take interest in novels and legends of events in this time period, yet you still like to read fiction novels. Because you like those types of writing that just makes this a perfect book for you to read, it has the perfect balance of both of those qualities that you love in books. I challenge you to read this book and I hope that you do. It will be a great adventure for you.

Yours Truly,

Stephen
