Social Classes

January17

The system of social classes has been followed for thousands of years, but in today’s society, education has dominated the idea of ethnicity and wealth involved in such an issue. Not only was the caste structure once followed in the United States or England, this system was and still is followed by hundreds of countries in the world, but now influenced by education. Weather it was gender, race, or wealth, this caste structure has so much power, that it can unconsciously change an individual’s perspective on their principles, values, and beliefs.

Wealth is a focus in which many people believe sets your status in society. Not only do you acquire more respect, but you also gain power in society with money. In my opinion, it did not matter how educated you were, but as long as you had money and kept prospering, you would have much more respect than someone that is positively influential, but lives in poverty. The quote, “No matter her past, when a chambermaid marries a lord she becomes a lady,” by an unknown artist, clearly illustrates the fact that wealth is extremely desirable and an enormous necessity to gain what you want. I believe that this quote has shown how wealth is a big deal, and it can change your identity greatly. In my opinion, the statement has shown the chambermaid as a woman without status, someone who would always be at the lowest part of the social system, and when she marries a man with wealth and a position in society, she finally has a “label” and  has become more prestigious in the system of social class. In my opinion, wealth in the past was like buying “respect.” The social system was just based on wealth and nothing more.

Ethnicity was an extremely prejudice topic when it came to the system of castes. In my opinion, this topic is the harshest in history, when it comes to class and status. It not only ruined thousands of lives, but it put down people just because of their skin colour  A quote that I believe represents this issue really well, is said by Jem in, To Kill a Mockingbird, “There’s four kinds of folks in the world. There’s the ordinary kind, like us and the neighbours, there’s the kind like the Cunningham’s out in the woods, the kind like the Ewell’s down at the dump, and the Negroes.” This quote has described how the black race is at bottom because of their religion.  In my opinion, the African Americans in this story are much harder working and positive compared to the Cunningham’s and Ewell’s, but they are put last in the caste structure based on their ethnicity. I believe that the fact that race had driven the social classes in the past is very cruel. I don’t believe in this system in anyway, especially when comes to putting a certain culture down. The issues with the African religion had gone on for years, and the worst had come when they were imposed to act as slaves for white Americans.

Education has become so overpowering in today’s generation; it has dominated the past structures, bringing a positive change in the social order. In my opinion this quote, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” is the best description of how the world has changed. This quote illustrates how education has so much power, that it has changed the world tremendously. The world has become so advanced due to education; a person’s status is now based on how knowledgeable and educated they are. In my opinion having social class being based on education is very encouraging for our future generations. In my opinion, the world will progress immensely when the future generation would educate themselves as much to be at the top. I believe education is a very positive transformation in society today, and also for future generations yet to come.

Throughout the thousands of years that this class system existed, the fact that education had tremendously influenced social class systems is very astonishing. Though the world has moved on, there are still countries and people that believe in the system revolving around wealth and heritage, but I believe that in the future, the idea of education will dominate the world thoughts, completely changing each and every individual’s outlook towards education and social caste in an extremely positive way.

Who’s Fault is it Really?

January7

In the past couple of days, a vile incident has struck India off its feet. During the evening of December 16, 2012, a 23-year-old medical student, was sexually abused, brutally beaten with an iron rod, and killed by six men in a Delhi bus, which “officially” was written off. The news enraged citizens of India, compelling them to stand up and demand for the justice and ruling that should’ve been in place long before. The citizens of India have now had enough of the violence against innocent women and young girls, that backing down from the long awaited protests, for the protection of women’s rights, is clearly impossible. Hearing about what this courageous woman went though, I felt a great amount of sorrow and acrimony. As a young girl and a person not surrounded by this violence, my perspective on this matter altered quite a bit.

Living in a 1st world country, I have never seen or heard of anyone go through an experience as despicable as the one this 23 year old woman went through, but as a young girl myself, I felt as if the pain she went through was one which greatly affected women all over the world. In my opinion, the law enforcement is the second culprit next to the heinous men, for not only this case, but all related cases. It was told that the bus that this incident took place in was one which was written off and was not allowed to run on the roads, but still the bus was activated illegally and went through many roads, highways, and intersections with police officers surrounding all around, however the vehicle was not stopped or even noticed once. This illustrates how the police and government officials have a great amount of involvement, inattentively, in cases that have been reported to be on the busy streets of India. Most sexual assault cases in the past, which have been reported, had no action taken. As I heard about the investigations from the past cases, I unconsciously started to compare India’s “strict” laws with Canada. I am extremely surprised about how the government is not even aware of what is going on in India, but in multiple ways, is responsible for much of the criminal activity held in this engrossed country.  Investigations have shown that not only do Indian officials blame women for bringing rape upon them, but they also mock them for their situation. Cases like these depict how the Indian government has shown much disregard towards women’s rights and safety.

I believe that the government of India has been less involved in their legal jurisdictions, but by the end of these protests, there will truly be a change in India’s cultivation. The protests being held in Delhi are going to impact many other countries with the same issues, compelling them to do something about this matter, and bring a positive change in their atmospheres. The step that the Indian society has taken will surely help protect, and change the world’s perspective towards women, bringing females more respect and dignity than ever before.

Marriage

December16

As years have gone on, traditions all over the world have changed when it comes to marriage. In Shakespeare’s time, the world believed in arranged marriages, but after Romeo and Juliet was produced, many perspectives probably changed. People may have looked at Romeo and Juliet’s love in a negative perspective back in Shakespeare’s time, but in today’s society, Romeo and Juliet is one of the reasons we have a totally different outlook on nuptials.

In mainstream society love marriages are now temporary, unlike arranged marriages. Although, arranged marriages still exist all over the world, love marriage is dominating. In my opinion, love marriages are now like a type of culture that is slowly spreading all over the world, since the 1600’s. In many cultures today, there are still denials to love marriage, and even in my culture, there are people that don’t accept marrying for love, but in my opinion, love marriages are an extraordinary part in a person’s life, and that everyone should approve of ones love. As long as the couple is happy together, and wants to spend the rest of their lives together, that’s all that matters. For instance, in Romeo and Juliet, the only reason their love wasn’t accepted was because of the feud between the two families. There was an important reason to why the parents didn’t give their consent, but the feud could have been put behind. It took 2 lives to commit suicide in order to have both families live peacefully with each other. Parents should look at the consequences of separating two people that love each other, even though, I believe now days, death surely isn’t even a threat or consequence in todays generation.

Although arranged marriages are quite different compared to love marriages, some say, they usually end up the same; the couple falls in love, and lives happily for the rest of their lives. I can assume that because my parents had an arranged marriage. Despite that, it’s quite the opposite in Romeo and Juliet. For example, Paris wanted lord Capulet’s consent to marry his daughter, and probably thought it was only up to him when it came to Juliet’s marriage, but Lord Capulet plainly told him he had to win her over in order to marry her; Lord Capulet says, “And too soon marr’d are those early made,” you can tell he had experience with his wife and him being married to early, and without Lady Capulet’s consent, as being the reason to their relationship not working out as much as Lord Capulet wishes. I believe this play was distinct from any real life situation. I assume that Shakespeare was purposely showing how an arranged marriage would never work out because Juliet is meant to be with Romeo. I believe arranged marriages should only be accustomed if both the groom and bride give full authorization to the marriage. No marriage can work out well in the future if the two people that need to be most committed do not have a say in who they want to spent their life with.

The fact that both arranged marriage and love marriage have a lot to do with parental consent is extremely significant.  In my culture, my parent’s approval before making commitment to a life long relationship, is one the most important parts of the marriage. Even if my parents didn’t care as much about my decision, it is a value for me, to get my parents consent before taking any life long step. In Romeo and Juliet, the protagonists may have not taken parental consent before getting married, but it was obvious how they wished they could tell their families about it, but stopped themselves when they thought about the consequences. Romeo and Juliet hid their love from their loved ones for the benefit of both households.

Overall, I believe any sort of commitment should only be made with a person’s full confirmation. Culturally, there are many different perspectives on marriage, but the topic of love marriage is spreading all over the world and changing peoples view on love. Parental consent is one of the most important values for many people in the world, but as problems like disapproval have come up, consent has started to become less valuable to the newer generations. Romeo and Juliet has impacted many generations in the past and surely for the future. Shakespeare has set out an incredible example of love for young adults all over the world, and I truly believe this topic of marriage and love will affect many people in the future also.

My One and Only Love

November11

It’s Friday night with the snowflakes

Dropping non-stop like fragile feathers.

As the wind grows expeditiously

So does my heartbeat.

The butterflies in my stomach just doubled.

Its only 4:00 pm, and all I can think of is my ambition,

To win it over.

Dribble, move, pass, and kick.

Everything I’ve felt in the past 8 years is back.

That feeling of innervation

Just can’t seem to leave my body.

I ask myself, “Will this emotion ever leave me?”

Anxiety adulterated with a sense of delectation

Is all I can feel, as I stand on the grass-like turf.

Wondering if this is the time to shoot,

I observe the crowd jump out of their seats.

I’ve got my cue

I watch them scream like they are in pain,

Knowing it’s there happiness bursting

Out, like never before.

We won!

As I walk back to the locker room with my team mates,

I reflect back at all those years I’ve played

The day’s that one touch of the ball was the key to my smile

And an escape from reality

It’s soccer, my one and only love.

REASON:

The reason I chose to write a poem about Soccer is because it’s truly one of the topics that I am most familiar and experienced with. Soccer has been a passion of mine since I was a little girl, and I think I could best express how I feel about soccer since I have faced every emotion, in actuality, that I have described in the poem, My One and Only Love.

Stanza 1: The first stanza sets off the setting and atmosphere of the poem. When it mentions snow, you can clearly recognize it portrays the game taking place during the winter season, which means the sport is happening inside a Soccer Centre. Lines 3 and 4, “As the wind grows expeditiously, so does my heartbeat”, are describing the atmosphere, but it also explains a bit of my emotions. It sets how I feel before playing the game, which will be expanded in the second and third stanzas.

Stanza 2: The second stanza basically shows how I am ready to go with lots of time left for the match to start.  This stanza expresses my mixed emotions of excitement and anxiousness. This stanza also depicts how I am imagining the way I plan to perform, and that I desire to win the game.

Stanza 3: The third stanza is expanding my feelings before stepping on to the field.  Stanza 3 explains how I enjoy soccer a lot, but has always been nervous before playing the game.  The first line and last line create an understanding that displays that the emotions have always been there, no matter how long I’ve been playing.

Stanza 4: The fourth stanza is about how I feel standing on the field. It portrays me playing the game, with the ball in my feet and indicates that I don’t know what to do because of my nervous emotions.  It also starts off to talk a bit about the crowd, which is later expanded in the next stanza.

Stanza 5: The beginning of this stanza displays how I have finally got into the game and lost my nervous reactions.  This stanza is mostly revolved around the crowd, which are the parents. I chose to involve the parents because they are the reason that we are standing on the field and able to play. It shows how much my parents want me to succeed and go further and complete my aspirations in soccer. The stanza expresses how the parents feel about soccer, and that they are a big part of our success.

Stanza 6: The last stanza is ended off with how I feel about soccer and how in actuality it is my escape to reality. I ended it off by revealing that the topic was soccer, which was probably guessed throughout the poem, and expressed how much I love this sport.

The Kite Runner

October28
Dear Ibadat:

Over the summer, I read a heart-touching novel called The Kite Runner. This book, written by Khaled Hosseini gives you a sense of reality and value to all the advantages we have living in a secure and healthy environment. As much as we do not realize how grateful we should be to have all the needs and more, when you read a novel like this you feel utter despair for the children not being able to go to school and working as servants at an incredibly young age. Khaled Hosseini gives you a book that will shatter your heart in every way possible. Since I have known you, I have learnt that you love the novels that make people realize how fortunate they are, and I truly believe this book is a one of a kind; it will change your views greatly.

These boys are like brothers, but are estranged due to the countries atrocious circumstances which makes you put yourself in that position and be affected by the atmosphere so dramatically that you will not be able to believe, and for the most part handle what the children in Afghanistan have at such a young age.

“There are a lot of children in Afghanistan, but little childhood.”

This quote is greatly related to Hassan. He has been working as a servant from the time he was able to think straight. He did not have a childhood like Amir did; wealth, school and friends just were not in his fate. Instead Hassan’s circumstances were permeated with sorrows. The disconsolate incidents that Hassan has to face gave me one of the most forlorn feelings I had ever met. The book only explains what Hassan had endured, but in reality, he is not alone; kids all over the country face abuse, homelessness and hunger. You appreciate how blessed you are; hardly do kids have to face these circumstances in a country where education is provided freely and wars are something that barely exists. We live in a country like this; we have all the advantages the children in countries like Afghanistan dream of. Since we were born we have gotten everything from affection to our unnecessary longings. This novel gives you a look at life in a whole new perspective. Since I put a hand on this novel, I can proudly say I have been impacted powerfully.

One of the most important themes that were met in this novel was love. I have known from day one that you are an absolute fan of books that involve family and affection, and I believe this is the best book for you to read because these two factors and much more eye-opening incidents that are involved.

“When you kill a man, you steal a life. You steal his wife’s right to a husband, rob his children of a father. When you tell a lie, you steal someone’s right to the truth. When you cheat, you steal the right to fairness.”

This quote portrays many different views, but I found that it related quite well with family and affection. Though one may be wealthy and fortunate than the other, there is still a perception of jealousy involved. You notice how Amir is envious to Hassan because he feels that he is not loved as much as Hassan is by his father. I realized how wealth was not even important to him; Amir wanted adoration from his father more than he had a desire for anything else. Children in Afghanistan may not have the fortune of school or a secure environment, but what most matters to them is love, and still most of them are forsaken on the streets after they are born with no one to save them, which was basically the case with Hassan and his biological mother. I realized how love is the real wealth in your life not the number of dollars you have sitting in your bank account. I put myself in his position and thought about it; if my parents barely had any affection for me, I would be nothing, their love is apart of my identity and I truly believe that it is involved in enormous part of life for a person. We have everything, from love to our desires, from the minute we were born. I possibly cannot understand what they go through, but I realize how hopeless those kids are living in such horrible circumstances; but that is exactly why I want to help those kids and make a change in countries that have suffering, desperate kids. This book truly teaches you to appreciate yourself and the people around you because without them, you wouldn’t be able to live in such blessed circumstance.

You are the first person I would recommend this great book to because of all the lessons and remarks that are made in a person’s life after reading this novel. I assure you that you will look at life in a whole new perspective and will also help be apart of teaching everyone to appreciate the life we are living. This book impacted me immensely and I can guarantee it’ll impact you greatly also.

Yours Truly ,
