Personal Response : To Kill Mockingbird
Scout has a certain respect to adults and older people in her life. She appreciates how affect her life and how she lives it. When exploring the idea pf perspective in the book To kill a Mockingbird the perspective you see the most is the narrator,Scout. Taking her perspective on her life you explore the idea of who she respects and looks up to in her life each day. When having respect for someone you give your full attention and try to please them so they approve of you. Scout does this threw Atticus, Jem and Calpurnia but each one she shows her respect to them in a different.
In the Book the one person Scout respects and looks up to the most is Atticus Finch, her father. Having no mother she is physically and mentally drawn to her Father , which then she ends up being daddy’s little girl. Threw out the book you see her perspective of how she respects Atticus. One of the many ways she respects him is by calling Atticus instead of father or dad. Another way she gained respect for him when he shot the rabid dog. Both Scout and Jem think that there dad is just some old guy who does nothing until he shoots a gun causing them ,especially Jem , to respect him even more. Another perspective of respect that Scout has of her father is when he try to explain things to her and Jem. At scouts age she asks a lot of questions about things and Atticus always has a way to explain and answer her questions will gaining her respect for her fathers wisdom.
When having an older brother like Jem you want to be able to be accepted in what he does. Scout has a different type of respect for Jem then to Atticus. Scout wants to gain respect from Jem so that he can play with him . An example of this is when Dill and Jem are about to look threw a window at Boo Radleys place. When Scout tells Jem shes scared he tells her to stop being a girl and becoming more like a girl every day . Scout doesn’t like this comment because she wants to be one of the guys and fit in with them . After Jem tells her this she stops her whining and toughs up so she can gain her respect for him.
Scout having no mother figure of her own she finds other people to fill in that spot. The main person she looks up to and takes that perspective of respect is Calpurnia . Calpurnia is there cook and maid in the Finch household. She takes care of Scout as if shes her own daughter. The perspective that Scout gives of Calpurnia is motherly advice. Calpurnia is always there to help her with her with a problem or is she doesn’t understand something. An example of Calpurnia giving her motherly advice is when Water Cunningham’s comes over to dinner and starts putting to much syrup on his food and scout calls him out on it. Calpurnia then calls her in to teach her about manners and how Walter Cunningham is there guest and he can put as much syrup as he wants on his plate.
Having people in your life that you respect can have a large effect on your life growing up . Scout has this in her life giving her advantage over most kids her age on experience on how life can be threw older peoples eyes. She witnesses this threw the eyes of Atticus , Jem and Calpurnia , three people who have a large respect for Scout just as Scout has for them.
