Personal Response : To Kill Mockingbird

January21

Scout has a certain respect to adults and older people in her life. She appreciates how affect her life and how she lives it. When exploring the idea pf perspective in the book To kill a Mockingbird the perspective you see the most is the narrator,Scout. Taking her perspective on her life you explore the idea of who she respects and looks up to in her life each day. When having respect for someone you give your full attention and try to please them so they approve of you. Scout does this threw Atticus, Jem and Calpurnia but each one she shows her respect to them in a different.

In the Book the one person Scout respects and looks up to the most is Atticus Finch, her father. Having no mother she is physically and mentally drawn to her Father , which then she ends up being daddy’s little girl. Threw out the book you see her perspective of how she respects Atticus. One of the many ways she respects him is by calling Atticus instead of father or dad. Another way she gained respect for him when he shot the rabid dog. Both Scout and Jem think that there dad is just some old guy who does nothing until he shoots a gun causing them ,especially Jem , to respect him even more. Another perspective of respect that Scout has of her father is when he try to explain things to her and Jem. At scouts age she asks a lot of questions about things and Atticus always has a way to explain and answer her questions will gaining her respect for her fathers wisdom.

When having an older brother like Jem you want to be able to be accepted in what he does. Scout has a different type of respect for Jem then to Atticus. Scout wants to gain respect from Jem so that he can play with him . An example of this is when Dill and Jem are about to look threw a window at Boo Radleys place. When Scout tells Jem shes scared he tells her to stop being a girl and becoming more like a girl every day . Scout doesn’t like this comment because she wants to be one of the guys and fit in with them . After Jem tells her this she stops her whining and toughs up so she can gain her respect for him.

Scout having no mother figure of her own she finds other people to fill in that spot. The main person she looks up to and takes that perspective of respect is Calpurnia . Calpurnia is there cook and maid in the Finch household. She takes care of Scout as if shes her own daughter. The perspective that Scout gives of Calpurnia is motherly advice. Calpurnia is always there to help her with her with a problem or is she doesn’t understand something. An example of Calpurnia giving her motherly advice is when Water Cunningham’s comes over to dinner and starts putting to much syrup on his food and scout calls him out on it. Calpurnia  then calls her in to teach her about manners and how Walter Cunningham is there guest and he can put as much syrup as he wants on his plate.

Having people in your life that you respect can have a large effect on your life growing up . Scout has this in her life giving her advantage over most kids her age on experience on how life can be threw older peoples eyes. She witnesses this threw the eyes of Atticus , Jem and Calpurnia , three people who have a large respect for Scout just as Scout has for them.

Romeo’s Love

January4

Love is like a disease that someone can catch , you either fall in love to the point where your so in love you get depressed or its true love but not truly met to be because of certain circumstances. This is what happens with Romeo and his two lovers Roseline and Juliet.

When first meeting Romeos character we find him sad and depressed because his love Roseline does not love him back. Romeo has fallen so in love with Roseline that is makes him depressed cause all he can think about is her. he believes at this point that without Roseline his life cant continue and theirs no point. though the boys try to cheer up the are unable to succeed because hes so fond of Roseline that hes unable to have fun with the boys.

Romeo than meets Juliet and they tables have turned in who he loves now. Romeo soon fines out after meeting his new love of his life that she is a Capulet ,his enemy . Instead of  Romeo giving up on Juliet, he risk it his life to be with her . Though Romeo is not suppose to love a Capulet he does what ever he can to be with one included marrying Juliet no matter what he has been raised upon. He even kills himself just to be with Juliet because he wouldn’t be able to live in a world without her, that is wouldn’t be the same.

As you can see Romeo can take love to another level , that you have have different stages and emotions for love that you thought a guy would never have. Having a depressed type of love and have a rebellious type of love with two different people. Most people wouldn’t be as depressed as Romeo was or be able to kill themselves because they were so in love with that person it takes a lot of  passion and love for some to be able to do that .

If I should have a daughter

December7

Poem: “If I Should Have a Daughter” by Sarah Kay

If I should have a daughter, instead of “Mom,” she’s gonna call me “Point B,” because that way she knows that no matter what happens, at least she can always find her way to me. And I’m going to paint solar systems on the backs of her hands so she has to learn the entire universe before she can say, “Oh, I know that like the back of my hand.” And she’s going to learn that this life will hit you hard in the face, wait for you to get back up just so it can kick you in the stomach. But getting the wind knocked out of you is the only way to remind your lungs how much they like the taste of air. There is hurt, here, that cannot be fixed by Band-Aids or poetry. So the first time she realizes that Wonder Woman isn’t coming, I’ll make sure she knows she doesn’t have to wear the cape all by herself because no matter how wide you stretch your fingers, your hands will always be too small to catch all the pain you want to heal. Believe me, I’ve tried. “And, baby,” I’ll tell her, don’t keep your nose up in the air like that. I know that trick; I’ve done it a million times. You’re just smelling for smoke so you can follow the trail back to a burning house, so you can find the boy who lost everything in the fire to see if you can save him. Or else find the boy who lit the fire in the first place, to see if you can change him.” But I know she will anyway, so instead I’ll always keep an extra supply of chocolate and rain boots nearby, because there is no heartbreak that chocolate can’t fix. Okay, there’s a few heartbreaks that chocolate can’t fix. But that’s what the rain boots are for, because rain will wash away everything, if you let it. I want her to look at the world through the underside of a glass-bottom boat, to look through a microscope at the galaxies that exist on the pinpoint of a human mind, because that’s the way my mom taught me. That there’ll be days like this. ♫ There’ll be days like this, my momma said. ♫ When you open your hands to catch and wind up with only blisters and bruises; when you step out of the phone booth and try to fly and the very people you want to save are the ones standing on your cape; when your boots will fill with rain, and you’ll be up to your knees in disappointment. And those are the very days you have all the more reason to say thank you. Because there’s nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline, no matter how many times it’s sent away. You will put the wind in winsome, lose some. You will put the star in starting over, and over. And no matter how many land mines erupt in a minute, be sure your mind lands on the beauty of this funny place called life. And yes, on a scale from one to over-trusting, I am pretty damn naive. But I want her to know that this world is made out of sugar. It can crumble so easily, but don’t be afraid to stick your tongue out and taste it. “Baby,” I’ll tell her, “remember, your momma is a worrier, and your poppa is a warrior, and you are the girl with small hands and big eyes who never stops asking for more.” Remember that good things come in threes and so do bad things. And always apologize when you’ve done something wrong, but don’t you ever apologize for the way your eyes refuse to stop shining. Your voice is small, but don’t ever stop singing. And when they finally hand you heartache, when they slip war and hatred under your door and offer you handouts on street-corners of cynicism and defeat, you tell them that they really ought to meet your mother

I chose, “If I should have a daughter”, by Sarah Kay as my personal response of a poem. The reason I chose this  poem to write it on because one, it was one that I could understand and two, because I feel as if I can relate to it by having a mom who has three daughters and what her morals are for helping us grow.

In Sarah’s poem what I have found that she is trying to portray is the way she is going to take care or raise her daughter if she was to have one. She tells us how she going to get her daughter to look at a different point of life by looking at this a different way ,and how she’ll paint space of the back of her hand so she’ll know it before she can say . ‘I know it like the back of my hand”. Just like every mom she has a way of how she wants to raise her daughter and this is how she wants to raise hers. Another part of her poem that stuck out was about how cruel the world can be. As she referred the world is like sugar that it crumbs and breaks but don’t be afraid to stick out your tongue out and taste it.

The way that is poem connects to me is because of how my mom has three daughters. Just as Sara Kay had morals and ways of how she is going to raise her daughter just as much does my mom have. /My mother probably had and probably still does have ideas of how she wants her daughter to turn out and having certain morals that she wanted us to be raised up on. An example of one of my moms morals is us to be raised up in a Christian church and to love the lord just as she does and that is what she did.

The theme that I find that is in this poem is parent hood. I find that in the poem really shows what parents go through before having a child and what kind of life they have planned out for them. All parents have there worries whether or not they are going to be a good parents or not for there child and having an idea of how they are going to raise them because that is was how they were raised.

I personally find that this poem is very inspiring for other and for new moms who want a good life for there daughter or child. It gives you a great sense of what a mother goes through. Sarah Kay give a great representation of this in her poem. It shows you that even before the child is born parents are worrying about there child’s future or whether there going to be a good parent of not.

Blinded by Passion

November28

Passion can blinds ones thinking and reasoning by giving them hope of fulfilling their most passionate dreams , while not thinking of ones fears or consequences. When having too much passion for something or someone you can be blinded by some many things in the world. You lose the idea of thinking about things and always going with what your heart tells you to do. In the film The Truman show, the director Peter Weir explores the idea of passion. The Truman show is about a middle aged man having his life video without him knowing and having it put on television for peoples entertainment. In the film, Truman is the star of the show but when it comes to has passion you see it mostly in Christof. Christof is the director of the show The Truman show. Toward the end of the show Truman does show passion but overall Christof shows it the most. Moments were you see this great passion is Christof speaking to Sylvia, Christof trying to convince Truman to stay and when Truman is leaving.

Though Truman is the star of the show Christof really demonstrates the most passion in what he does in the movie and how it affects the reasons of the things he does to Truman in the movie and the consequences resulting from it. When Christof is talking about Truman he says “He can leave whenever he wants to.” Christof is saying this to Sylvia a former cast member on television when she calls to rant about how Truman should know he’s on television. Though Christof says this he does anything in his power to stop Truman from leaving. He does this by crushing his dreams of exploring and stopping him from climbing to see what’s on the other side of the rocks. Though Christof says these things are good for him I personally do not see it. As show throughout the movie, Christof’s passion is deeply shown when there’s a video of Truman and he’s sleeping not only is this on a large screen, but Christof is petting him like he’s his own son. He acts a god figure and has so much love and passion for Truman that he never wants to let go of him or let him leave. As illustrated Christof has successfully blinded him from really thinking about what he wants. To be a part of this world or the real one and often overlooking not having Christof decide for him.

Christof illustrates his passion towards the show and Truman most effectively. Christof tries to convince Truman to stay, he does this by saying, “Why are you not leaving yet? Are you to afraid? “Or he says, “I know you better then you know yourself.” I believe that this does confuse Truman into having doubts in his decisions to leave and having a different point of whether or not should he leave. Christof having so much passion of Truman and the show he doesn’t want his star to leave. That all the actors’ lives are at risk and even Christof own. This demonstrates that Christof wasn’t aware of the consequences that would occur when Truman grew up and found out about his life being an illusion that he didn’t even think of the idea that Truman wouldn’t want to be a part of it anymore if he knew his life was a lie. This shows that when people don’t know about the truth the consequences of it all can have a larger effect when finding out the truth of it on your own.

Truman passion to find freedom may be shield but when it is demonstrated it is powerful. Just having that one thing that you want can leading you to have so much passion and not even thinking about what consequences it may bring. In the movie, Truman is on the boat and sailing away, he truly does not think of anything other than wanting to get out of this place and exploring the world. When Christof started the storm they all expect him to turn around and stay in the show because he will be too scared to continue, but no matter what Christof does Truman keeps going and holds onto that dream of leaving. Even when going to the exit door he knows what he has to do because it’s his dream to see the world the way it truly is without it being prefect.

Passion can blind ones thinking and reasoning by giving them the hope of fulfilling their most driven dreams, while not thinking of ones fear or the consequences. As I have explained The Truman show really demonstrates how having passion for something or someone can lead to terrible consequences and creating large effects on their life.

High School Musical Vs. Reality

October6

As a child I was raised on Disney, and the one thing that you had to watch to be cool in elementary school was to watch all three High School Musical. Now growing up and watching these movies I had great expectation for what high school was supposed to bring me. I was expecting singing and choreographed dances that people did down hallways and in the lunch room but no that’s not what happened. When walking down hallways or anywhere people didn’t look like they enjoy being at school and I wouldn’t blame them. Most of the kids look like they’re dead and ready to kill you if you got in there way.

Though my heart has been crushed that there’s no singing and dancing that I was expecting to gladly walk in on, I was soon to find out that there is no Troy Bolton in my school. Now there is some good looking guys in my schools but there’s no Troy Bolton. No athletic sporty guy that later you find out that he can sing like an angel. Nothing like that will I find at my school. You’ll just find over achieving guys or guys that are too concerned about basketball to pay to attention to you. Nothing worth fainting over when you see them walking down the hallway.

But the one thing that I do have is a Sharpay Evans. That one girl that with the snap of her fingers she gets whatever she wants. She’s the girl that if you steal a little bit of her spotlight from her she will do anything in her power to crush you and your dreams. These girls are worst when it comes to guys. If that girl wants the guy you like you better back off the guy otherwise the next four years of High school are going to be terrible.

Now the thing that I was expecting the most was those dance numbers with singing that the characters did when something exciting happened or they had to “get there head in the Game”. These moments got me all the time and I was expecting for me to have to do these moments down a hallway when going through a struggle at school ,but that never seemed to happen. All the practicing for those moments are down the drain.

As you can see the whole dream of what High school was supposed to be for me was crushed on the very first day of school. No one singing and dancing in the hallways and everything being so boring day to day. Also not bumping into that Troy Bolton that you were expecting on the first day of school. So the moral of the story is that High School Musical lied to me on how High School was supposed to be and all that practicing was a waste of time.
